Acronym MAST
Expansion Motion Artifact Suppression Technique
Explanation Method whereby spins that are moving at a constant velocity along a gradient are rephased by virtue of a reversed or inverted gradient pattern. The resultant waveform results in every second gradient echo being rephased, or "flow-compensated"

Acronym MIP
Expansion Maximum Intensity Projection
Explanation

MIP diagram

MRA post-processing technique used to display results of TOF or PC sequences. Algorithm involves selecting largest value (maximum intensity) along a set of imaginary viewing angles through the imaging volume. See

Acronym MOTSA
Expansion Multiple Overlapping Thin Slab Angiography
Explanation

(Diagram)

In 3D TOF imaging, slowly flowing blood can become saturated and produce signal drop-out, and this increases with slab volume. MOTSA technique uses series of overlapping thin slabs to combat this problem. However, saturation within the combined thin slabs produces "Venetian blind" artifact. Another method is to use a ramped RF pulse that produces a higher flip angle across a slab, so that all spins experience a more constant flip angle.

Acronym MRA
Expansion Magnetic Resonance Angiography
Explanation Using magnetic resonance techniques to produce angiographic images. Can be performed without (usually) or with contrast. TOF techniques utilize flow-related enhancement whereas PC techniques utilize phase accumulation along a gradient.

Acronym MTC
Expansion Magnetization Transfer Contrast
Explanation

(Diagram)

Method of suppressing signal from tissues with high protein content (brain, muscle) by applying a saturation pulse far (-1500 Hz) from the resonance frequency of water, which saturates protons bound to macromolecules (proteins), as well as nearby water (magnetization transfer).

Acronym NSA
Expansion Number of Signal Averages
Explanation Number of NMR signals average together to arrive at a final value for each signal location. Signal to noise and scan time both increase with increasing number of signal averages.
